All the Tech News You Need (in 20 min's or less)

Great post by ValleyWag: Get all the tech news you need (in 20 minutes a day)!

Here's a quick recap from VWag's post:

The tech industry is huge and ungainly, but it's not impossible to get a grasp of its daily news. There are ways to deeply understand tech through hours of reading per day, but for the busy pro with only 20 minutes for tech news, use the following daily process.

Optional time-saver: Instead of reading the sources below by going to the different sites, consider reading the RSS fees on Google Reader or Bloglines.

1. Skim the headlines of these top news sources:

Digg: Technology
Techmeme
GigaOM
Engadget

2. Skim these sources for commentary:

Paul Kedrosky's Infectious Greed
Valleywag
Techdirt

3. Read these mainstream sources:

CNET News
NY Times Technology
Financial Times

4. Once or twice a week, check in with these sources:

BusinessWeek
Wired News
Wired Magazine

5. Once a week, listen to this podcast during your commute: This Week in Tech

I like the resources VWag mentions, but might substitute a few of my faves:

DailyWireless, TechCrunch, and Unstrung (course, he might figure that TechCrunch gets all the pub it needs).

#1 Worst Way to Quit Your Job

I know it's entertaining.

Yes, I laughed just like you did.

But as he mentions at the end of the video, this bridge, for all intents and purposes, is BURNED.

No letters of reference.

In fact, the only letter he'll receive will say "Restraining Order" at the bottom of the page.

So, before you think about acting the comedian.....oh what the heck grab a magic marker and let's crank the music!

3 Tips for Becoming a Google Grabber

John Lennon wasn't talking about Google, but his question from long ago is appropriate for today:

``Why has nobody discovered me?''

Great question, John. And, surprisingly, it's still the $64 question with just a lil' twist:

"What do I have to do to get Google to notice me?"

Well, Jefferson Graham (USAToday) provides the answers to the question we've all googled a few thousand times...HERE.

Actually, the answers come from Chris Winfield, president of website consultant 10e20. In the article, Winfield offers up a few tips, and yes, these seem to be fairly universal (applicable) to all of us). Don't expect to crash Digg's servers with this info, but they do serve as solid reminders of the activities that should be fundamental to our blogs/sites, etc.
  1. Link to other quality websites (the holy grail of blogging - gives your blog authority/weight in the blogosphere). Think of links as word-of-mouth. The more people on the web who are "talking" about you, the more your site rises to the top.
  2. Have a clear website title (ex: WirelessJobs.com - there should be no question in your mind what you'll find at this site. The title is visible along the top of Internet Explorer or other web browsers. This is the first thing Google looks for when crawling the Web.
  3. Make sure your descriptive copy (the meat of your posts) includes search terms (key words) that articulate how you want to be discovered by search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

Winfield also advises using a free tool Google offers for keyword tips: AdWords.

These online keyword tools help Google's advertising clients, who buy sponsored pay-per-click links to guarantee good placement in the search results. But they are available, free, to everyone.

If you are looking for more information to help you gather more "Google Juice" for your site or blog, here's a few more articles for you: problogger, marketingprofs (requires membership but is free), and the blog herald.

Good luck.

Now, go get noticed.

The Telecom Conundrum (not for the faint of heart)

It's almost as if John Madden is responsible for creating the diagram that sent this whole Telecom-thing in to a tailspin.

Ok, we need some clarity, and Stephen Colbert is just the guy to do it.

Honestly, if somebody explained the evolution of Telecom to you back in 1956, would you have believed 'em?

Click below and be prepared to crack up.

Flikzor ... create your own viral videos

Found this on TechCrunch, and I'm digging the idea. In fact, I registered but since I left my headset/mic at work, I'll have to wait to do my voice recording.

Check it out - there were 40+ access codes left when I registered.

Job Hunters Pound the Job Search Pavement

Those that know say job-seekers have been slammin' the job boards big-time as 2007 gets under way. Maybe it's the recovery from the year 2000 slump, or, maybe the ice-cream man is collecting on our holiday purchases.

Either way, the job-hunt is on as job-seekers appear to be looking for opportunities to increase the cash flow.

According to Hitwise, market share for visits to the job boards rose 31% for the week ending January 6th, 2007, as compared to the prior week.

CareerBuilder took 14 percent of the job board traffic, followed by Monster at 11.5 percent, and Yahoo's HotJobs at 5 percent.

Tech's Top 10 Hot Growth Companies

Apple and Google continued to log big gains this year. Suppliers to chipmakers and companies in the telecom sector also scored robust growth in 2006

BusinessWeek's Arik Hesseidahl ranks the tech industry's hot growth companies.

Apple and Google soared on the strength of two seemingly unstoppable trends, the iPod and online advertising, respectively.

In addition, memory chips were hot, but it was the companies that supply chipmakers, not the chipmakers themselves, that saw healthy growth.

For a look at BW's picks for the top 10 hot growth tech companies, click HERE.

Visa had a "pod" in the Near Field Communications [...]
